I recently met with
Rosedale resident Elizabeth Redfern, who suffers from cataracts in both eyes, and as a result is legally blind.
Elizabeth
is frustrated with the lack of assistance for people just like her, who go about their daily lives struggling to see and unable to live the normal life that you and I can sometimes take for granted.
If Elizabeth and others in her situation could afford to, they would have the surgery needed to remove the cataracts today.
But sadly for Elizabeth and many others, it is not that simple.
Elizabeth
is looking at, on average, $4,000 per eye to remove her cataracts. In addition to the $8,000 needed for the eye surgery, she will need to pay for a week's worth of accommodation and transport.
It is money that she just doesn't have.
In the meantime, she waits on our state's lengthy waiting list to have the surgery through the public system. After waiting for eye surgery for seven years now, with her eye sight further deteriorating, her patience is understandably running out.
